WP Engine Review
Virtually every web hosting company offers WordPress, the content management system (CMS) that will power more than a third of all websites in 2021. However, managed WordPress hosting, such as the services provided by WP Engine, take WordPress hosting to the next level.
WP Engine uses its caching system, content delivery system (CDN), and data centers of your choice in North America, Europe, or Asia. Your websites are hosted on the fast Google Cloud Platform. This means that your WordPress website should load quickly for your visitors, improving the customer experience.
Managed WordPress hosting not only helps your WordPress site perform well, but also eases the day-to-day operation of your site. WP Engine includes features like automatic plugin updates, malware detection, and automatic backups, so managing a WordPress site becomes less of a task.
In our WP Engine review, we pit the provider against the best website builders available today by looking at its pricing, features, performance, and customer support.

WP Engine Web Hosting Plans and Pricing
WP Engine has no less than 12 hosting plans available along with custom dedicated hosting solutions. These are divided into managed hosting, managed to host plus, and secure hosting plans. If you pay annually instead of monthly, you get a discount of about 20%.
Managed hosting plans start at $25/month. For this, you get a single website, 10GB local storage, 50GB bandwidth, and 25,000 visits per month. The other three managed hosting plans increase the number of sites, visits, and storage you get and are priced at $59/month, $115/month, and $290/month.
Managed Hosting Plus plans start at $34/month for a single site and go up to $310/month for multiple sites. You get the same bandwidth, storage, and visits as managed hosting plans, but you also get more features. Notably, you get automatic plugin updates and support for many custom WordPress plugins.
Lastly, Secure Hosting plans start at $53/month and go up to $350/month. These include everything from Managed Hosting Plus plans, and add security features that help protect your site from malicious traffic spikes and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.
WP Engine's introductory plans can be a bit restrictive, but the mid-range Managed Hosting Plus plans are more competitive. Compare the pricing directly with other managed hosting plans and it may seem expensive initially, but WP Engine packs in more features for your money.
WP Engine Features
The main reasons to choose WP Engine over cheap WordPress hosting are increased reliability, performance, support, and management, but these are hard to quantify. Some features are distinctive when you browse the interface, however, they may give you some information about the service offered.
WP Engine Page Performance is a neat tool designed to help speed up your WordPress site by offering meaningful metrics on performance.
Running a test gives you a page-performance report detailing how quickly your page rendered, how long it took to load completely, and the total size of the page. It even includes historical data on your site's performance over the past six months and recommendations on how you can reduce page loads.
Avoid embarrassing mistakes on your site by making changes to a copy of your website before it goes live. This is called staging, and it allows your developers to make extensive changes to your site without affecting your customers.
In a relatively unusual move, WP Engine restricts the number of WordPress plugins you can install. Usually banned are those plugins that have been noted because of performance issues and security holes. For important features like caching, backup, and search engine optimization tools, WP Engine has made available options that don't put much load on the server.
WP Engine Interface and in use
WP Engine's interface is professional and well-crafted, but the powerful features can mean a steep learning curve for inexperienced users. If you have a grasp of terms like Git, CNAMEs, and redirect rules, you'll be at home here, but otherwise, you'll need to spend some time on the help site.
In our testing, the default WordPress home page loaded in just two seconds. It's got one of the fastest responses we've tested, with competitor Liquid Web only slightly behind.
WP Engine The competition
If it's a high level of customer support for you in a managed WordPress host, Liquid Web often tops customer satisfaction surveys. It has a focus on high-end products like virtual private servers (VPS) and dedicated servers, so if your needs extend from a high-performance WordPress site to other software solutions, we recommend checking it out.
TsoHost is another managed web hosting provider that we recommend. Prices can add up, with even the most basic VPS options starting at $52 per month, but you get a level of hands-on customer support that is truly unmatched.
WP Engine Support
A managed WordPress service should provide added value through its support, and WP Engine delivers. The support site includes the quality videos and articles you'd expect from a paid training course, along with help on deep WordPress functionality that not many WordPress hosts go into.
There is also 24/7 live chat support and a ticketing system. In our testing, the response was quick and the agent was knowledgeable. For all plans except single-site plans, there is also telephone support.
WP Engine: Final Call
Although not the cheapest managed WordPress hosting company, we think WP Engine's speed, reliability, and long list of features warrant its high price.
This isn't the first WordPress host we'd recommend to newcomers, as the breadth of tools can be intimidating.
But features like an integrated content delivery network, staging, caching, automated backups and great customer support make it easy to recommend to SMEs who need a WordPress host that will grow with their needs.
